Introducing solid foods to your baby is a big step, and getting it right can support healthy growth, stronger immunity, and better eating habits for life. This guide uses evidence-based recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to help Kenyan parents feel confident, safe, and prepared.
Why Start at Around 6 Months?
From birth to about 6 months, your baby gets most of their nutrients from breast milk. WHO and UNICEF recommend:
Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months
Then introducing nutritious complementary foods
While continuing breastfeeding up to 2 years or beyond
At 6 months, a baby’s nutrient needs (especially for iron and zinc) increase and breast milk alone can no longer meet them. This is why starting solids at the right time matters.
Signs Your Baby Is Ready
Before starting solids, check for these readiness cues:
✔ Can hold their head up steadily
✔ Shows interest in food (watching you eat, reaching for food)
✔ Opens mouth when food comes near
✔ Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex (no automatic pushing food out)
What First Foods to Offer
In Kenya, you can use safe, locally available foods that are nutritious and easy to prepare. WHO and UNICEF recommend starting with nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest complementary foods from 6 months, especially those that help meet increased needs for iron, zinc, and energy.
Good beginner foods include:
Mashed bananas
Soft cooked sweet potatoes
Mashed avocado
Well-cooked millet porridge (smooth texture)
Well-cooked rice porridge
Mashed banana mixed with a little milk
While homemade foods are important, many babies at this stage require additional iron and key micronutrients. That’s why fortified complementary foods can play a valuable role.
Plumbee's Tano Baby Rice and Tano Baby Wimbi (sprouted millet) are specially formulated and fortified to support growing babies from 6 months:
Fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, including iron to support healthy development
Made to a smooth, baby-friendly texture
Tano Baby Wimbi is sprouted, making it naturally easier to digest and helping improve nutrient availability
Designed to complement continued breastfeeding
These options provide consistent nutrient quality while remaining gentle on small, developing digestive systems.
👉 Always ensure first foods are soft, smooth, and lump-free to prevent choking and make swallowing easier. As your baby grows, gradually increase thickness and texture.
